P&G is acquiring Thorne, a well-known US-based supplements maker. The $3.8 billion acquisition is designed to bolster P&G’s “ability to meet growing consumer interest in self-care, prevention and personalized wellness,” the maker of Tide and Olay said yesterday when the accord was announced.

Speaking to CNBC, P&G CEO Shailesh Jejurikar confirmed the deal and discussed the company’s focus on beauty and wellness.

Thorne’s Business Model

Founded in 1984 by Al Czap, Thorne has built a reputation as trusted brand among healthcare practitioners, athletes and professional sports teams. The company, which went public in 2021,  was acquired by private equity firm L Catterton in October 2023 for $680 million.

Thorne offers a wide range of nutritional supplements including ingestible beauty. Thorne Radiant Skin Complex, for example, is formulated with antioxidant-rich botanicals, hyaluronic acid and eggshell nutrients to fortify the skin barrier and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, according to the company.

Thorne has a vertically integrated model with its own manufacturing operations in South Carolina.

“Thorne has built a highly trusted brand at the forefront of personalized health,” said Paul Gama, CEO, health care at P&G. “Together, we see an opportunity to bring Thorne’s science-backed wellness solutions to more consumers while continuing to build on the quality, credibility and innovation that have made the brand successful.”

Colin Watts, CEO of Thorne, said the acquisition will allow Thorne to continue advancing its mission.

“For more than 40 years, Thorne has earned the trust of healthcare practitioners, consumers, and partners by putting science, quality, and the people we serve at the center of every decision,” said Watts. “As we looked to the future, we kept coming back to one question: What will best position Thorne to continue fulfilling its mission? We believe P&G is the right partner to help us expand our impact while staying true to the values and standards that have always defined Thorne.”

Earlier this year, Thorne was named as one of the 2026 Time100 Companies: Industry Leaders in the Wellness category.

Wellness Expansion

P&G’s deal for Thorne follows a similar move by Unilever, which earlier this year acquired Grüns, a greens supplement maker, as reported by Happi.

P&G’s supplement brands currently include Metamucil, New Chapter and Align Probiotic.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Closing is expected later this year, according to officials.
